The tower was first lit in 1792 and no longer serves as a light for ships. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The first lighthouse built by the new federal government, the stone tower was replaced by the iron one beside it in 1881; Preservation Virginia cares for it and opens it to visitors on Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Virginia Beach Fishing Pier, 9.7 km (6.0 mi) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Virginia's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Virginia arrives.
