Lighthouse · Cape Charles, Virginia
Cape Charles Lighthouse

The tower was first lit in 1895 and no longer serves as a light for ships. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tallest lighthouse in Virginia, this iron skeleton tower on Smith Island has been dark since 2013 and was removed from service in 2019; the island is a closed preserve, so people see it from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, the Eastern Shore wildlife refuge and boats.
