The tower was first lit in 1881 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light is charted as Mo (U) W 20s, seen up to 17 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The black-and-white iron tower still guards the southern entrance to the Chesapeake Bay, about 350 feet from the old stone tower on Joint Expeditionary Base Fort Story.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Virginia Beach Fishing Pier, 9.7 km (6.1 mi) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Virginia's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Virginia arrives.
