It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The oldest caisson lighthouse in Virginia stands in Hampton Roads just east of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel; it has been privately owned since 2005 and is seen from the Newport News shore and the bridge-tunnel.
