The tower was first lit in 1806 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 5 seconds. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Standing on a rock-ringed islet off the southern tip of Mathews County, the sandstone tower was relit in 2021 and is seen from the boardwalk at New Point Comfort Natural Area Preserve.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from New Point Comfort Natural Area Preserve, 2.2 km (1.4 mi) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Virginia's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Virginia arrives.
