The tower was first lit in 1911 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows a green light, on and off for equal times, every 6 seconds, seen up to 7 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A small cylindrical pierhead light on the east side of the harbor entrance, facing the West Pierhead lighthouse across the channel.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Wendy Park, Cleveland, 1.2 km (0.7 mi) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Ohio's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Ohio arrives.
