The tower was first lit in 1917 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one red flash every 4 seconds, seen up to 7 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The concrete lighthouse at the end of the west breakwater at the mouth of the Black River in Lorain; saved from demolition in 1966, it carries a minor red light again.
