The tower was first lit in 1902 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 6 seconds, seen up to 9 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A sparkplug tower about four miles west of Middle Hooper Island, the only one in Maryland with a watch room below the lantern; privately owned since a 2022 auction and seen from boats.

How to see it

Above water but beyond the horizon from Point Lookout State Park pier, 24 km (15 mi) away: the curve of the earth hides it. CoastFinder draws it faintly and marks it hidden, with its bearing and distance.

On the website for now. Maryland's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Maryland arrives.
