The tower was first lit in 1895 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 6 seconds, seen up to 8 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In Kedges Straits north of Smith Island, a brick tower left standing off-center on its 1895 caisson after the house was removed; it is seen from boats and, far off, from Ewell.
