The tower was first lit in 1875 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 5 seconds, seen up to 16 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The last screw-pile cottage lighthouse still on its original site in the bay, a National Historic Landmark off Thomas Point south of Annapolis; summer boat tours from Annapolis land at it.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Thomas Point Park, Annapolis, 2.3 km (1.4 mi) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Maryland's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Maryland arrives.
