The tower was first lit in 1897 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows a steady red light, seen up to 15 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A white steel tower, the rear light of the range that guides boats through Death's Door; Plum Island is a national wildlife refuge open for day visits in season, but the buildings are closed.
