The third lighthouse on Bodie Island, completed in 1872 after the first tower (1847) leaned on poor foundations and the second was blown up by retreating Confederate troops in 1861. The 156 ft (48 m) tower wears horizontal black-and-white bands and still turns its original first-order Fresnel lens, showing two white flashes every 30 seconds. Restored and reopened for climbing in 2013.
