Shipwreck · Cape Lookout, North Carolina
Caribsea
A freighter torpedoed by U-158 off Cape Lookout on 11 March 1942, carrying manganese ore from Cuba. Her nameboard and part of her superstructure drifted ashore at Ocracoke, where her mate, James Gaskill, had grown up; the islanders built a cross for their Methodist church from her timber, and his officer's license was found among the wreckage on the beach.
