Shipwreck · Cape Fear, North Carolina

Ella

The blockade runner Ella, wrecked at the mouth of the Cape Fear River during the Civil War. A 1934 survey charted her as a visible wreck that uncovered 5 ft at low water; by 1963 she no longer showed at low water, and the chart now has her always under water with no sounding over her (NOAA record 553). The depth shown is the seabed 158 m away, so she may lie shallower: treat the spot as a hazard near low tide.
