Bald Head Island

The island at the very tip of Cape Fear, where the river meets the Atlantic. There are no cars, only a passenger ferry from Southport and golf carts at the other end, and most of the island is maritime forest and marsh held in conservation. Old Baldy, the state's oldest standing lighthouse, is a short walk from the landing; the ruins of Confederate Fort Holmes are in the woods; and the beaches are among the busiest sea-turtle nesting grounds in the state.
