Shipwreck · Cape May, New Jersey

SS Atlantus

One of the experimental concrete ships built for the United States in World War I, launched in 1918 at Brunswick, Georgia. Laid up after brief service and stripped of her engines, she was brought to Cape May in 1926 for a planned ferry landing, but a storm tore her loose and she grounded off Sunset Beach. The broken hull lies just offshore, seen from the beach at Cape May Point, with more of it showing at low tide. Don’t try to swim or wade out to it: the currents are strong.
