The tower was first lit in 1874 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one red flash every 5 seconds, seen up to 11 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A limestone tower on a reef 11 miles east of the Straits, the costliest lighthouse built on the Great Lakes; it is seen only from the water or the air.
