Built in 1823, Ocracoke is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina and the second oldest in the country. The squat whitewashed brick tower rises 75 ft (23 m) above the village and shows a fixed white light rather than a flash. It marked the once-busy Ocracoke Inlet, the main colonial route into Pamlico Sound.
