Ocracoke Island

A 16-mile island reachable only by ferry, with a single village clustered around Silver Lake harbor at its southwest end. Blackbeard was killed just offshore in 1718, and the island's British Cemetery holds sailors from HMT Bedfordshire, sunk by U-558 in 1942. Its wild ponies and undeveloped beach are part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
