The tower was first lit in 1910 and no longer serves as a light for ships. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The octagonal brick tower on a 130-foot cliff southwest of Silver Bay, dark since 1969, is a Minnesota Historical Society museum inside Split Rock Lighthouse State Park and a National Historic Landmark.
