The tower was first lit in 1903 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows a steady red light, seen up to 13 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A red cast-iron tower at the end of the south pier at the mouth of the Black River, still linked to shore by its original catwalk.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from South Beach, South Haven, 396 m (1,300 ft) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Michigan's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Michigan arrives.
