The tower was first lit in 1936 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows white and red in turn every 10 seconds, seen up to 17 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Known as Big Red, the lighthouse on the south side of the Holland channel is reached only across private land; the classic view is from Holland State Park across the channel.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Ottawa Beach, Holland State Park, 326 m (1,069 ft) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Michigan's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Michigan arrives.
