The tower was first lit in 1876 and no longer serves as a light for ships. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tower in Tawas Point State Park still holds its Fresnel lens and is a museum; it has been dark since 2016, when a skeleton tower nearer the tip of the sandy point took over.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Tawas Point State Park, 191 m (625 ft) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Michigan's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Michigan arrives.
