The tower was first lit in 1950 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 15 seconds, seen up to 15 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A white square tower on a crib at the end of the breakwater off McLain State Park, where the Portage waterway meets the open lake.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from North Canal Township Park, 820 m (2,689 ft) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Michigan's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Michigan arrives.
