The tower was first lit in 1874 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 6 seconds, seen up to 12 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It stands on Au Sable Point in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, a 1.5-mile walk along the shore from the Hurricane River campground, and the tower is open in summer.

How to see it

Above water and inside the horizon from Woodland Park, Grand Marais, 11 km (7.1 mi) away, so on a clear day it can be seen from there, and CoastFinder puts a label on it.

On the website for now. Michigan's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Michigan arrives.
