The tower was first lit in 1904 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows a white light that goes dark briefly every 4 seconds, seen up to 10 nautical miles out. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A white octagonal tower on its fog signal building at the end of the east pier, still joined to shore by an elevated iron catwalk; it is seen from Washington Park beach.
