The tower was first lit in 1936 and is still an aid to navigation. Its light shows one white flash every 2.5 seconds, seen up to 8 nautical miles out. It stands on Stuart Island, reached only by boat, on the Canadian border.

How to see it

Above water but beyond the horizon from Lime Kiln Point State Park, 20 km (13 mi) away: the curve of the earth hides it. CoastFinder draws it faintly and marks it hidden, with its bearing and distance.

On the website for now. Washington's lighthouses are in the web viewer first, and they are coming to the CoastFinder app, which covers the North Carolina coast today. Follow @coastfinderapp to hear when Washington arrives.
