Shipwreck · Pawleys Island, South Carolina
USS Harvest Moon
A Union sidewheel steamer and flagship of Rear Admiral John Dahlgren, sunk in Winyah Bay on 1 March 1865 by a Confederate mine, in the last weeks of the Civil War. She settled into the mud of the bay and her smokestack stood above the water for generations, a landmark for boats running up to Georgetown. The wreck is a protected historic site.
