Shipwreck · Ocracoke, North Carolina

British Splendour

A British tanker torpedoed by U-552 on the night of 7 April 1942 east of Cape Hatteras; 12 crew were lost and 41 rescued by HMS St Zeno. The wreck lies in about 100 ft (30 m) with its stern the most recognisable section. The NOAA sanctuary page and two independent dive references agree on this position, 35 miles south-west of Cape Hatteras. NOAA's older AWOIS wreck list carried a record 60 km to the north-east under this name and a record here labeled Proteus; the dive positions show the two labels were swapped.
