Shipwreck · Ocracoke, North Carolina
Albatross
A 149 ft fishing trawler out of Wilmington, Delaware, driven aground off Ocracoke Inlet by strong winds on 21 February 1940 and broken up by the sea. Her mayday went by ship radiotelephone through the Norfolk marine operator; the cutter Modoc could not reach her in the shallows, and the Ocracoke station's surf boats took off Captain Dan Hayman, fourteen crew and two passengers. The chart's 2004 survey still found her hull above water here.
