Pea Island
The northern 13 miles of Hatteras Island south of Oregon Inlet, set aside in 1938 as Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge for wintering snow geese and tundra swans. It was the station of the Pea Island Life-Saving crew, the only all-Black crew in the service, led by Keeper Richard Etheridge from 1880.
