At 198 ft (63 m) the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, first lit in 1870 to warn shipping off Diamond Shoals. Its black-and-white spiral daymark is the signature of the Outer Banks. In 1999 the entire 4,800-ton tower was moved 2,900 ft inland to escape the eroding beach; the light still shows a white flash every 7.5 seconds, visible about 20 nautical miles.
