Papoose

A tanker torpedoed by U-124 off Cape Lookout on 18 March 1942, one of three ships the same submarine sank within a day. For decades divers and charts have had this wreck and the W.E. Hutton, sunk in the same attack, the wrong way round, and the hull charted here as Papoose is now generally believed to be the Hutton. Whichever name is right, it is one of the most-dived wrecks in the state, lying in about 120 ft (37 m).
