Oak Island
A twelve-mile barrier island on the west side of the Cape Fear mouth, facing due south. The town of Oak Island takes up most of it; Caswell Beach, at the east end, has the Oak Island Lighthouse and the remains of Fort Caswell, begun in 1826 to guard the river. The fishing piers and the wide, flat beach are the draw.
