USS New Hampshire
A 74-gun ship-of-the-line laid down at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in 1816 as the Alabama and not launched until 1864, as New Hampshire: a hospital and supply ship at Port Royal in the Civil War, then a receiving ship and the New York Naval Militia's training ship, renamed Granite State in 1904. Burned at her New York pier in 1921, sold, patched and taken in tow for the breakers at Eastport, she caught fire again off Boston on 27 July 1922; the towline parted and the burning hulk drifted onto the granite shoals at the southwest corner of Graves Island, Manchester-by-the-Sea, where she was left. Three salvage operations took her live-oak timbers for their copper fastenings, said to have come from Paul Revere's foundry. A Massachusetts BUAR exempted site: recreational diving and casual collecting need no permit, and any major disruption is prohibited. BUAR's position is the island's own, so the point is approximate; a charted wreck 560 m to the southwest, in about 36 ft of water, may be her remains.
