Data sources

CoastFinder covers the coast of North and South Carolina, with more regions to come.

Every position and depth in the app comes from one of the sources below. The app lists them under Data sources in More, and every detail card names the source of that feature.

About OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is the Wikipedia of maps: a map of the world made by volunteers, free for anyone to use. Anyone can add a missing lighthouse or correct the name of an island. Changes reach CoastFinder the next time a region is rebuilt. If you would like to help, openstreetmap.org/fixthemap explains how.

When something is wrong

Use Report a problem in the app. At the bottom of every detail card, Something wrong with this? Report it opens a draft email that says which feature, which region pack and which app version the report concerns, so we can trace it back to the source. You read it and send it yourself. More on the Support page.

How accurate is it?

It depends on the source, and the app keeps track of which is which. Every feature records where its position came from, how far off that position could be, and whether a person has checked it. A light from the Coast Guard Light List is good to about twenty metres and a charted symbol to about fifty; a wreck placed from an old loss report may be out by several kilometres. Where two sources disagree and nothing settles it, the feature is marked as disputed. When the doubt about a position is wide enough to matter from where you stand, the app draws a dashed span instead of a point, and depths that are interpolated rather than surveyed are labelled as such.
